Kindergarten learned about artist Dale Chihuly and his glass sculptures. We watched a YouTube video of him in action and the kids were blown away. We then made paper sculptures out of coffee filters to resemble Chihuly's work. Students colored with markers on coffee filters, and then we put them on upside-down cups with a rubber band and I sprayed them with heavy starch. Each was a masterpiece! First grade just finished clay pinch pots inspired by artist Georgia O'Keeffe. They LOVED this project and did an awesome job! Students learned about the firing process in the kiln, and after the pots were fired they used tempera paint to give them some color. Lastly they covered their pot with a thin layer of glossy mod podge to give it a little shine. Kindergarten most recently just finished these mixed media Birds in a Nest. We started by talking about texture and we watched a silly Sesame Street clip to introduce the topic. We identified different textures and then focused mostly on hard things and soft things. For our nests we used materials with a hard and rough texture. For our birds we used materials that were soft and fuzzy. I helped students make sure the feathers (wings) got enough glue to stick, as well as hot glued the sticks in the nest. These have received many compliments from the other teachers, and I think they are just adorable.

After finishing up our art show projects it was time to get into some 3D work. We talked about sculpture and the endless possibilities of media, but started simply with paper. First grade was challenged to find ways to make the paper pop off the page. We also watched some of the old school Lorax since it was Dr. Seuss's birthday week... And of course we tied it in by talking about recycling/repurposing our paper scraps! Kinders have been learning about 3D shapes in math, so we talked about Form in art, and constructed some paper cubes- which was definitely "academically challenging"... The folding of the flaps and gluing it just right was a little much for some of them in one class. But it was more about the learning experience of turning something flat to 3D, so I wasn't too concerned about the products. We also had a day of exploring sculpture through centers... cardboard construction, play-doh, and building blocks |
