Our last days in art were spent collaging, sculpting Shaun the Sheep, and free-painting. :) It's been a great first year for me at Riverside! :)

First grade learned about the weaving process and practiced their over-under pattern on a variety of looms set up at different centers. Shout out to my husband and grandfather who built the fantastic loom of wood and chicken wire! Other looms included plastic baskets, cardboard looms (I pre-made these and this proved to be the most challenging for their little hands to maneuver!), and paper looms (I also pre-made these, then taught students how to make them the next class). One student even went home and made her own paper weaving :)
Kindergarten finally got their chance to work with the oh-so-special CLAY. First I had to explain the differences between clay and play-doh... and yet they still refer to it as clay-dough, which drives me nuts. Then they practiced many of the hand-building techniques with modeling clay first so that they were ready for the real thing. These hearts were made by rolling coils and balls of clay mostly. I got the idea from School Arts Magazine, and pretty much followed their lesson plan. A note to fellow art teachers: The whole thing was almost a flop because the earthen red clay that we used was terribly sticky and their little hearts kept getting messed up... but what I ended up doing was using plastic ziplock baggies directly under the clay. This allowed students to see the heart template as a guide for shape and size. When they finished I picked up their work and gently peeled it off the plastic bag. After the hearts were finished we let them dry for a few days before going in the kiln. Once they were fired we tried a new technique for decorating the surface of the clay. Instead of using a glaze we used crayons and watercolor paint. I have heard that construction paper crayons work even better than regular crayons so I will try those next time.
Anyway I thought they turned out cute. |
