Last week we had a little fall fun with these quick one-day projects! Kindergarten made pumpkin collages, practicing their cutting and pasting skills. We llooked at a real pumpkin that I brought in, and talked about how it has curved lines. We also looked back at some of Matisse's paper cut outs for inspiration. First grade learned to draw a spider web and used the oil pastel/watercolor resist method. When I demonstrated how to draw the web it looked "so easy" but many students were surprised to find it a bit of a challenge :) I loved how they turned out. Friday we celebrated Book Character Day and I dressed up as Harold's purple crayon :) We ended a busy week with some fun at the Fall Festival!

Our featured "Artist of the Month" is master Henri Matisse. We looked at several of his paintings, as well as his paper cut outs. Kindergarten focused on Matisse's still life painting of apples for their inspiration. They began by tracing a circle template for the plate. Then they painted their plate using tempera and practiced using the different types of lines we recently learned. They used texture rubbing plates to create a texture all over their background. I explained that the background space was the table that their plate of apples would sit on, and that we were adding the texture pattern to make it look more real. I had students use the larger crayons for coloring over the texture plates, and it was still quite a challenge for some! Lastly, (the next class) we cut out the plate and glued it on our table (background) and painted a couple of red circles with acrylic paint to create the apples :) i think they are fabulous! First grade focused on looking at Matisse's paper cut outs for their project. Students learned about organic shapes, which were pretty hard to cut out! We also talked about the season of Fall and how we can use a color scheme in our art. This was going to be a quick one day project, but it turned into a 2-day lesson. Students needed more time to grasp the concept of organic shapes, and to really fill the space of their paper. I left it pretty open ended with how they created their composition. Some students chose a subject and others went for an abstract look. On the second day when some students were struggling to cut Matisse-like shapes, I provided some leaf stencils that students could trace and cut out. We also looked at Matisse's The Parakeet and the Mermaid and each student added one cut paper shape to a large collaborative mural.
