Kindergarten finally got their chance to work with the oh-so-special CLAY. First I had to explain the differences between clay and play-doh... and yet they still refer to it as clay-dough, which drives me nuts. Then they practiced many of the hand-building techniques with modeling clay first so that they were ready for the real thing. These hearts were made by rolling coils and balls of clay mostly. I got the idea from School Arts Magazine, and pretty much followed their lesson plan. A note to fellow art teachers: The whole thing was almost a flop because the earthen red clay that we used was terribly sticky and their little hearts kept getting messed up... but what I ended up doing was using plastic ziplock baggies directly under the clay. This allowed students to see the heart template as a guide for shape and size. When they finished I picked up their work and gently peeled it off the plastic bag. After the hearts were finished we let them dry for a few days before going in the kiln. Once they were fired we tried a new technique for decorating the surface of the clay. Instead of using a glaze we used crayons and watercolor paint. I have heard that construction paper crayons work even better than regular crayons so I will try those next time.
Anyway I thought they turned out cute.
